Yamaha Rallye Round out Safari in Top 3
30 Sep 2011

Rod Faggotter raced through the final day formalities without any drama to secure third place overall in the 2011 Australian Safari on board his Yamaha WR450F.

In what was a challenging event for Faggotter, the tough Queenslander endured three long days of racing in some of the most rugged and remote environments with a broken bone in his hand to secure the podium position in a true iron man performance.

Since the injury just prior to the mid way stage of the event, Faggotter has been in survival mode but using his years of experience, he managed to nurse his injured body home in what was ultimately frustrating experience for him.

“It’s great to be on the podium but for the last few days I have been doing more riding than actual racing to make sure I got home,” Rodney explains. “It’s not a good way to be in an event like this and I really wanted to give 100% but I was unable to do that after the crash, so in many ways it was tough out there.”

“I couldn’t have gone as far as I have without the support of my Yamaha team who have kept both me and the bike ticking along nicely. It’s a huge effort to do this race and as a team, everyone worked together and we had a great time.”

“I also want to pass on thanks to the Smith boys on a great event and just let them know we will be back next year and gunning for number 1.”

Shane Diener again scorched up the WA out back in the final day of competition taking two stage wins, an equal first and a second in the final four stages. In doing so, Diener won more stages than any other rider.

He finished the event in an amazing fifth spot, this despite receiving a 4.5 hour penalty for not completing a stage on day five.

“All I can say is that I gave it my best,” Diener laments. “There is no doubt my result would have been different had that DNF not occurred but that’s part of the challenge of racing in the safari and this style of event.”

“Winning the most stages and climbing back to fifth is good and I’m happy with the way I rode. The team also did an amazing job and this is the first time I have done an event like this with so much support and I’m thankful to Yamaha for giving me the opportunity,” he finishes.

Yamaha Motor Australia- Media Guide
Australian Safari

Yamaha Motor Australia will enter a two rider team into the 2011 Australian Safari. Longreach Yamaha dealer Rod Faggotter and experienced South Australian off road campaigner Shane Diener will lead the Yamaha charge in what is Australia’s toughest and longest off road event.

THIS YEARS’ RACE
This years’ event will see competitors, in both two and four wheeled divisions, leave Hillary’s Boat Harbour in Perth for an eight day adventure in some of Australia’s rugged and remote bushland as they head north to Geraldton, inland into the WA goldfields and down to the finish at Kalgoorlie.

Competitors travel up to 700 kilometres per day and spend eight hours in the saddle as the work they way around a course using only the route maps provided up the event organizers. So, not only do riders have to read the unforgiving terrain of the WA outback and at speeds of up to 170km/hr, but they must do it while reading their route sheets mounted on their handlebars.

It is a race of speed, skill, athletic endurance and mechanical perfection. Each day trail sections lead to special tests where riders must focus all their energies on riding at the edge of the envelop on unfamiliar terrain. Eight days of physical and mental punishment wears on even the fittest warrior while machine preparation and construction have a huge say in the overall result.

It is rough, tough and nasty! Faggotter and Diener wouldn’t have it any other way.

THE RIDERS
Rod Faggotter is fast becoming one of Australia’s best off road adventure riders. Twice the winner of the prestigious Condobolin 750 event and with a motocross racing background, the Centretune Motorcycle dealer has all the attributes to succeed in adventure racing.

In 2010, Faggotter was running in a podium position and pushing for the lead when he made a mistake on day five and broke his wrist. Ever the warrior, Faggotter tried to push on but was unable to finish the event. For 2011, he has unfinished business and ever since the wrist injury healed in 2010, he has been preparing for this event.

No stone has been unturned. His fitness is better than ever. The Yamaha WR450F is bulletproof and recognized as the most reliable and durable dirt bike on the market. His lead up form has been good and look for Faggotter to make his presence felt at this years’ event.

South Australian Shane Diener comes to Yamaha with a gear bag full of experience at all aspects of dirt bike racing. Like Faggotter, his younger days were spent as a motocross racer, giving him speed and skill. He moved into off road and then endurance events and is a past winner of the SA 24hour event where competitors race throughout the day and night.

Despite coming from injury in early 2011, Diener is back to full strength and not to be taken lightly.

THE YAMAHA WEAPON
When you think of off road and adventure racing, the Yamaha WR450F is the only weapon of choice. With a reputation in the motorcycling world, the WR450F has turned the wild and untamed into the meek and mild since its inception in 1998. And that’s not just for the racer in us, the WR450F has regularly been Australia’s most popular dirt bike over recent years.

For many riders on other brands, the production bike is nowhere near good enough, versatile enough or simply reliable enough to last eight days of racing at break neck speeds. Not the WR450F. With very few changes apart from those required by event organizers and for map reading, the bikes that roll out under Faggotter and Diener are almost identical to those found on the showroom floor of your local Yamaha dealer.

Throughout the eight days, oils and fluids will be serviced, airfilters changed and nuts and bolts checked and the WR450F will keep humming along nicely. 2010 was a dream run for Faggotter with barely a spanner laid on the bike during the event.

“It’s nice to know that the bike is designed and built to handle everything I can throw at it during the Australian Safari, Faggotter offers. “I have enough things going through my mind in the race and the last thing I need to worry about is the performance of my bike. Thankfully Yamaha as done that for me and it’s my job to ride it as fast and as safely as I can for eight days,” Faggotter finishes.

The 2011 Australian Safari blasts off from Perth on September 22. For more information on the event, go to www.australiansafari.com.au . To follow Rod and Shane during the event, stayed tuned to the Yamaha website / facebook pages; www.yamaha-motor.com.au

CONDO 750 WIN !

Rod Faggotter has had a successful defense of his 2010 Condo 750 win, with another win again this year over easter of the 800 klm 2 day rally. This years event was a bit greener & wetter than the last few due to early season rains & floods. Out of the starting field of over 80 riders, Rod came in with a handy 5 minute lead over 2nd placed Damian Grabham after the 2 days of riding.

Finke Desert Race 2010

Hi everyone,
Sorry about the late update on Finke. I have been on the road the last few days since the race last Saturday/Sunday & Monday. I got over early for a week of pre-running & set up prior to the race which pales in comparison to what the locals do & what the likes of Team KTM have done, but it has to do!

The new 2010 YZF450 efi was a new challenge but it developed extremely well and had more than enough power in std form. Special thanks to Terry & Jan from Shock Treatment for their round the clock help in the last few days in getting my suspension sorted and to C&R imports in getting us the IMS tank just in time!
